No, the Motel is just under a mile from Saugatuck's downtown area.

How far are you from the beach?

Which Beach? There are a few in the area...

Saugatuck itself sits on the Kalamazoo River. Oval Beach, a Lake Michigan beach and rated one of the top beached in the U.S., is the most popular and, just like 90% of the other places in town, we are about 5 minutes by car.

Does it stop at the Hooten Inn?

The Interurban Bus is Saugatuck’s local door-to door transportation service, it’s only $1/per person and will take you anywhere you want to go in Saugatuck or Douglas, including Oval Beach. It operates like a taxi but for a lot less...for more information see our Area Info page.

In the off season there is plenty to do, too! September and October are optimal months for the "leaf peepers". October also brings the local corn maze and Halloween parade. At Christmas, Saugatuck does an official lighting of the tree ceremony and there is always an on stage production of the Christmas Carol playing. You can also enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride through downtown while you gaze at the latest production by the "Sparkle" committee, they light up the streets of downtown Saugatuck with a beautiful aerial display of lighted snowflakes - it's really quite a site to see! Come in late December and you can see fireworks over the River on New Year's Eve. If outdoor sports are what you're looking for; Snowmobiling, Downhill and Cross Country Skiing are all close by. May is brings the Tulip Time Festival in Holland it's a great way to kick-off the spring season!

Are the galleries, shops and restaurants open year round?

Some are some aren't...

Many of them are however, from about November through April most will have limited hours and may be closed mid-week. Yet, no matter what day of the year you stay here there will be some stores open and always several restaurants to choose from. Many stores are open Thursdays through Mondays during the "off months."

Is it hard to get a parking spot in downtown Saugatuck?

Not if you don't mind circling the block a few times...

During the peak season (May through October) it is more difficult to find a parking spot on weekends. However, you can park at the High School and a free shuttle will take you downtown and back. It is only a few blocks from downtown so the short walk is not bad either. Or, just use this as an excuse to get some exercise and talk a nice walk from the Hooten Inn, down the Bike Path, to downtown. It's only about a 1 mile walk and don't forget we offer bicycle rentals for a nominal $10/per day charge.
